DFEST 2008 is proud to announce, in pairing with Red Bull, Filmmaking Frenzy and Austin's legendary Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, our action-packed one-of-a-kind opportunity and creative mash up for Dfest artists, the DFEST 2008 edition of BPM (Beats per minute), a 48 hour filmmaking competition. This contest gives filmmakers from all over the country 48 hours to create a music video of a Dfest artist.

Red Bull Beats Per Minute was first launched at Red Bull Moon Tower during SXSW 2008. Click here to view some of those BPM videos.

At 7:00 PM on July 11, teams will be given MP3s of two songs from artists performing at DFEST July 25-26. This signals the beginning of the competition. Immediately you and your team start scrambling: listening to the song, decoding the lyrics, making the shot list, borrowing and stealing guitars, wigs - whatever it takes to make the most entertaining video of them all. Teams have 48 hours to complete a music video and upload it to this site. The contest ends at 7:00 PM on July 13, 2008 CST. Teams also need to send a DVD of their video to Frenzy head office.

Red Bull Beats Per Minute winners will be announced online and at the invite-only VIP kick-off party for DFest on July 24. The Top 40 videos will be shown throughout the DFest weekend in the Red Bull Beats Per Minute tent inside Main Stage grounds and the winning video will be premiered at the Main Stage during DFEST!

Prizes: Four members of the winning team will be sent to Red Bull Soap Box on Oct. 25th in Denver at Red Rocks. The prize includes flight for four and hotel for four for Oct. 24 & 25. Team members will get full media access to Red Bull Soap Box and rights to film the event. 2nd & 3rd Place BPM Prizes:
"I'll Show You Mine..." 2nd & 3rd place winners will be given $500 to throw
a Red Bull BPM video watch party in their hometown!

THE RULES

General rules: Teams have from between Friday, July 11, 7:00 PM CST and Sunday, July 13, 7:00 PM CST, to produce a music video for a band that will be performing at DFEST. All films will be posted online for voting by July 13 at midnight.

Registration for this competition begins on Monday, June 23, 2008.

On Friday, July 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM CST teams will be emailed a link to two MP3s. Your team must conceive, shoot, edit and post to the filmmaking frenzy website a music video for one of the two tracks. Teams have 48 hours to complete a music video and upload it to this site. The contest ends at 7:00 PM on July 13, 2008 CST. Teams must also send a DVD of their finished film, postmaked by July 14 to: Filmmaking Frenzy, attention Brad Parrett, 1120 South Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704. Teams in the Tulsa area are also invited to come to the kickoff and check-in parties to pick up their tracks and turn in their films. Details on these parties will be emailed to registered teams and posted on this website.

You may only use such audio tracks for purposes of the competition and for your own personal use. You may not provide others with copies of such audio tracks as the songs and recordings are and shall remain the property of the band or musician that created them.

Eligibility: Anyone can enter the Red Bull BPM 48 Music Video Competition. There are no age restrictions and entry is open to amateurs and professionals alike. No one helping with the film, however, can be paid. There is no fee to enter this Filmmaking Frenzy competition.

What happens when you sign up?
After you sign up for the Red Bull BPM 48 Music Video Competition, you will be able to access all filmmaker areas of the website. You will also be emailed with instructions for submitting your film online.

Requirements for the Video:
1) Films can be no longer than 30 seconds more than the song provided for the music video.
2) The films can contain violence or nudity but we cannot allow anything that would be deemed pornography. You may not harm real animals or unwilling people in the making of your video.
3) All films must include the Filmmaking Frenzy/Red Bull video tag at the end of the film. Download the bumper video tag (AVI) for the end of your film here (link coming asap).
4) All films must be entirely original to you and may not incorporate video or film footage from any other source.

Missing the time limit: In past years we let the time limit slide by a couple of seconds here and there. That WILL NOT BE THE CASE WITH THIS FRENZY. We don't care if the film was done but then your computer crashed. We don't care if you your internet was out and you couldn't make it to the nearest hotspot to upload. Factor the time to upload your film into your plan, because with the prizes at stake this year we won't budge an inch. If you miss the time limit by a second or a day, your film will still be able to viewed online and at DFEST, but it will not be eligible for any awards no matter how insanely awesome it is.

Online posting: You can post your film on any video hosting service you like immediately following the competition, but the film must include the official Red Bull BPM bumper tag at the end of the video. Download the bumper video tag (AVI) for the end of your film here (link coming asap).

Judging: All films that are completed before the time limit will be eligible to win. Online judging will determine the top 15 finalists. The top three films will be chosen by the DFEST judging committee and announced on July 24 at the DFEST kickoff party. The winners will also be posted online.

Online voting: The top 15 finalists will be determined by online voting on Filmmaking Frenzy. Scores for the videos will be hidden from public view until the 15 finalists are announced. Top ranked films are determined by a complex algorithm combining # of votes, the score of those votes and individual voting history. The more honest votes you have, the better your chances of becoming a finalist. Also be forewarned that the voting algorithm takes into account "vindictive" voting. Voting your movie a 10 and all others a 1 will not help your chances, and will in fact hurt your odds. Vote honestly for all films you watch.

Other prizes TBA.

Finished film format: We need both a playable DVD (any region) and an uploaded web version of your film. Uploaded films must be 100MB or smaller, 320 pixels wide. We can accept most formats: AVI, MOV, WMV.

Thumbnails: Teams are required to upload an image for your team and your film. Teams that do not have thumbnails posted by July 14 at 11:00 PM CST will not be eligible for prizes.

Ownership of the finished film: You will own any video that you create for the competition. However, Red Bull will have the perpetual right to broadcast, distribute and/or perform the videos on the internet or elsewhere, and use the videos for promotional purposes. The bands in the contest will also have the non-exclusive right to use the videos for their promotion.

Warranties and Indemnification: As a condition to participating in the competition, you represent and warrant that the video you enter in the competition, and Red Bull's use of such video pursuant to these rules, will not violate or infringe upon the rights of any third party, and you agree to indemnify Red Bull and its parent, subsidiaries, and affiliates, and their respective officers, agents, directors, successors, employees, licensees and assigns from and against all claims, damages and/or expenses (including, without limitation, attorney's fees and expenses) resulting from any breach or alleged breach by you of such representation and warranty.

Help and further Info: If you have other questions that haven't been answered on this site, please email filmmakingfrenzy@originalalamo.com and allow 24 hours for a response. We will do everything we can to help everyone out with all aspects of the competition, but if every filmmaker is looking for advice at 6pm on the day of the deadline, we're not going to be able to get to all of you before the time is up.
